Choosing Yarn Fiber for a Project

The property that most often decides whether a knitted project succeeds is not softness or colour. It is elasticity, and it varies enormously between fibers. A cuff worked in wool will hug a wrist for years. The identical cuff in cotton will sag within a season, because cotton has almost no memory. Choosing yarn well means matching the fiber to the mechanical job the fabric has to do.

What each fiber actually brings

Wool has a natural crimp and a scaled surface, which gives it high elasticity, good loft and strong insulation for its weight. It absorbs a lot of moisture without feeling wet, which is why it stays comfortable across a wide range of conditions. Alpaca is warmer than wool by weight but has little crimp, so it drapes heavily and grows lengthwise under its own mass. Use it for shawls and loose garments, not for ribbed hems.

Cotton is absorbent, cool against the skin and inelastic. It makes crisp stitch definition and excellent summer garments, but it will not spring back. Linen is stiffer still when new, softens dramatically with washing, and drapes beautifully once broken in. Silk is strong, lustrous and drapey with almost no recovery, so it is usually blended rather than used alone in fitted pieces.

Acrylic, nylon and polyester are hydrophobic. Research comparing knitted fabrics for skin-contact clothing found that wool blends gave the highest thermal resistance while polyester fabrics gave the lowest, and that fibers with high moisture regain such as cotton and wool dry considerably more slowly than polyester. That trade-off is the whole story for activewear: synthetics move liquid moisture and dry fast, naturals buffer humidity and insulate.

Memory and recovery decide ribbing

Ribbing works by folding the fabric into columns that pull together. It only holds if the fiber returns to length after stretching. Wool and wool blends do this well. Cotton, linen, silk, alpaca and bamboo do not. If you want a cotton sweater with a cuff that survives wear, either add a small percentage of elastane or nylon, work the ribbing on much smaller needles than the body, or design without ribbing and use a folded hem or garter edge instead.

The same logic applies to sock heels, hat brims and buttonbands. Anywhere the fabric is asked to stretch repeatedly and return, elasticity is the specification you are shopping for.

Pilling, durability and care

Pills form when short fibers migrate to the surface, tangle and cannot break free. Yarns spun from short staple fibers with low twist pill fastest, which is why many soft merino and cashmere yarns pill despite their quality. Tightly spun, longer staple yarns and firmly worked fabric resist it. Nylon blended into sock yarn is there specifically for abrasion resistance, not softness.

Care requirements are worth checking before you buy rather than after you knit. Superwash wool has been chemically treated or polymer coated to prevent felting, which changes its drape and can make it grow when wet. Untreated wool felts if agitated in hot water. Cotton and linen tolerate machine washing but shrink on first wash, so swatch and wash your swatch.

Fiber content on a yarn label is not marketing copy. In the United States, textile labelling rules require that fibers present at five percent or more be disclosed by generic name in order of predominance by weight, and the regulations define each generic name precisely. The rules under the Textile Fiber Products Identification Act set out those generic definitions, so acrylic means a polymer that is at least 85 percent acrylonitrile units, and it is not a loose descriptor. This matters when you are comparing two yarns that both call themselves soft: the percentages tell you which will pill, which will felt and which will recover.

Sensitivity and comfort

Some people find wool prickly, and the sensation is usually a mechanical response to coarse fiber ends rather than an allergy. Finer micron wools, alpaca and blends often feel comfortable to people who cannot tolerate coarser breeds. A smaller number of people report genuine allergic or irritant reactions to animal fibers, to lanolin residues or to dyes and processing chemicals. This article is informational only.
