Yarn Weights and Standard Yarn Systems

Yarn weight has nothing to do with how much a ball weighs. It describes thickness, and thickness is what determines how many stitches fit in a given width, what needle or hook suits the yarn, and how quickly a project grows.

The numbered system

The Craft Yarn Council’s Standard Yarn Weight System is the reference the yarn industry labels against. It runs from 0 Lace at the fine end through 1 Super Fine, 2 Fine, 3 Light, 4 Medium, 5 Bulky and 6 Super Bulky up to 7 Jumbo. For each category it gives a knit gauge range over four inches in stocking stitch, from 33 to 40 stitches for lace down to six stitches and fewer for jumbo, together with recommended needle and hook sizes in both US and metric terms.

The important qualification is printed on the chart itself. The figures are guidelines reflecting the most commonly used gauges and needle sizes for each category, and the council is explicit that you should always follow the gauge stated in your pattern. Lace weight in particular is often deliberately worked on much larger needles to produce an open fabric, so its category range tells you almost nothing about how a given lace pattern will be knitted.

Wraps per inch for unlabelled yarn

Stash yarn loses its ball band, and handspun never had one. Wraps per inch is the standard workaround: wrap the yarn snugly around a pencil or ruler for a couple of inches, keeping the wraps side by side without overlapping or gapping, then count how many fall within one inch.

The Craft Yarn Council publishes WPI ranges for each category: roughly 30 to 40 or more for lace, 14 to 30 for super fine, 12 to 18 for fine, 11 to 15 for light, 9 to 12 for medium, 6 to 9 for bulky, 5 to 6 for super bulky and 1 to 4 for jumbo. Note how heavily those ranges overlap, and note the council’s own caveat that WPI is subjective and varies with how tightly you wrap. Measure in several places, treat the answer as a starting category, and swatch.

Regional names and the confusion they cause

The numbers are recent; the names are not, and they never agreed with each other. Category 3 is called Light in the numbered system, DK in Britain, and light worsted in older US publications. Category 1 covers fingering, sock and baby weight, terms that describe intended use rather than thickness. Australian patterns may specify yarn by ply, which historically counted the strands in the yarn rather than measuring anything, so 8 ply is broadly a DK but a modern 8 ply yarn may be plied from very different singles.

Worsted is the worst offender, because it also names a spinning method, so a worsted spun fingering weight is a real and entirely sensible thing that reads as a contradiction. Treat every name as a hint and check the numbers.

The formal way to describe fineness

Outside the craft market, yarn thickness is specified numerically rather than by category name. The tex system is the standard for this. ASTM’s Standard Practice for Use of the Tex System to Designate Linear Density of Fibers, Yarn Intermediates, and Yarns defines it as a direct system based on mass per unit length in metric units, where one tex is one gram per kilometre of material, applicable to any fibre type or blend and to slivers, rovings, singles, plied yarns, cords and threads. Direct means a higher number is a thicker yarn, which is the opposite of the older indirect count systems still used in cotton and worsted spinning.

You will rarely see tex on a craft ball band, but you will see it on cones of weaving and machine knitting yarn, and it is worth recognising, because it is unambiguous in a way that the word bulky is not.

Substituting yarn properly

Substituting by category name is the most common cause of a finished garment that does not fit. Three things matter more.

  • Yardage, not ball weight. Compare metres or yards per gram between the original and the substitute, then buy enough total length rather than the same number of balls.
  • Gauge, proved by a blocked swatch in the pattern stitch. The Craft Yarn Council is direct about this: two yarns in the same weight category may be interchangeable, but you have to swatch to be sure.
  • Fibre and construction. A woollen spun wool, a worsted spun wool, a cotton and a silk blend can all hit the same stitch gauge and behave completely differently once the garment has hung for a day. Cotton and silk have little elastic recovery and will grow under their own weight; wool springs back. A firmly plied yarn holds stitch definition for cables, while a loosely spun single blurs them.
