Accurate Quarter-Inch Piecing

Patchwork is arithmetic executed in fabric. Cut sizes assume a quarter inch seam allowance on every edge, and every finished dimension in a block depends on that assumption holding. When blocks refuse to finish at the stated size, the seam allowance is almost always the reason.
Why It Is a Scant Quarter Inch
A seam is not a fold along a line. It is a fold around a structure with thickness. When you press a patchwork seam to one side, the fabric has to travel around the thread and around its own bulk at the fold, and that journey consumes fabric that a flat measurement does not account for.
The amount consumed is small, on the order of one or two thread diameters plus the fold, but it is consistent and it is real. The standard correction is to sew a scant quarter inch: a seam allowance a thread or two narrower than a true quarter, typically about 0.24 inches rather than 0.25. That deficit is then reclaimed by the fold, and the piece finishes at the size the arithmetic predicted.
Structurally, patchwork piecing is a plain superimposed seam, the simplest of the classified seam families. ISO 4916 classifies and designates stitched seam types by the cross section of the materials involved, and it is read together with ISO 4915, which classifies and describes the stitch types used in hand and machine sewn seams. The reason patchwork uses this most basic configuration is that its symmetry keeps thickness predictable, which is exactly what makes a fixed seam allowance workable across thousands of joins.
Testing Your Actual Seam Allowance
Do not trust the marking on your machine or the foot's name. Test it.
- Cut three strips of quilting cotton, each exactly 1.5 inches wide by about 4 inches long.
- Sew them together along the long edges with what you believe is a quarter inch seam.
- Press the seams as you normally would.
- Measure the finished width across the middle of the unit.
The result should be exactly 3.5 inches. Each outer strip contributes 1.25 inches finished and the centre strip contributes 1 inch. If you measure 3.4 inches, your seam is too wide by 0.05 inches divided across four seam allowances. If you measure 3.6, it is too narrow.
Repeat the test after any change to needle, thread weight or presser foot, because all three affect the result.
Getting the Seam Right

A dedicated quarter inch foot has an edge positioned at a quarter inch from the needle, and some have a flange to run the fabric against. It is convenient but it is fixed, so if it is wrong for your machine and thread you cannot correct it.
Needle position adjustment is the most precise option on machines that offer it. Leave a standard foot in place, move the needle laterally one step at a time, and rerun the three strip test until the unit measures 3.5 inches. This lets you dial in the exact scant allowance your setup needs.
A seam guide, whether a magnetic stop, an adhesive guide or a stack of masking tape built up into a ridge, gives a physical edge to run fabric against. The tactile feedback is more reliable than watching a line, particularly at speed. Position it by test, not by ruler.
How Errors Compound
This is the part that surprises people. An error of one sixteenth of an inch per seam sounds negligible. A nine patch block has six seams across its two directions, so that error accumulates to three eighths of an inch in the block. Set thirty of those blocks into a quilt top and the accumulated discrepancy runs to several inches, distributed unevenly because not every block has the same seam count.
The consequence is not just a smaller quilt. It is blocks that will not join because their seams meet at different intervals, borders that ripple because they were cut to the pattern's stated length rather than the top's actual length, and sashing that runs out. Measuring your top before cutting borders, rather than trusting the pattern, prevents the most visible symptom.
Pressing and Finished Size
Pressing is part of the measurement, not a step after it. Pressing seams to one side is traditional, adds strength, and lets you nest opposing seams at intersections for accurate matching, but it puts all the bulk on one side and consumes slightly more fabric at the fold. Pressing seams open distributes bulk evenly, produces flatter blocks and slightly larger finished units, but leaves nothing to nest and exposes the stitching to abrasion.
Pick one approach and use it consistently through a project, because switching midway changes your finished block sizes by a small but cumulative amount. Whichever you choose, press rather than iron: lift and set the iron down, never drag it, since dragging distorts the bias-adjacent edges that patchwork is full of.
